HOW TO GET INTO THE URBAN YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROJECT II (ONLY FOR POM AND LAE)

Halo olgeta.

Been a while since we put out a blog post but here we go, here’s the first one in a long time.

This is in regards to a post we shared on our LinkedIn page regarding an article on a cool partnership between Papua New Guinea’s Urban Youth Employment Project II and Coca-Cola Euro-Pacific Partners.

Here’s the link to the post on The PNG Recruiter LinkedIn Page: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/the-png-recruiter-limited_ccep-png-supports-the-urban-youth-employment-activity-7236849290680090624-UE6J?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

But to summaries what was discussed, we found some good information for anyone who’s interested in getting themselves involved in the project. If your one of those interested and are living in Port Moresby and Lae (they’re the only 2 locations in PNG where the UYDP II Project is operational in), refer to the below details taken from the LinkedIn convo on how you get do so:

WHERE CAN I FIND THE URBAN YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROJECT II (UYEP II) OFFICE?

As mentioned in the LinkedIn post link above, the UYEP II Project is only operational in Port Moresby and Lae. So there office locations are as follows below:

PORT MORESBY UYEP II OFFICE LOCATION:

  • NCDC Annex Building, Level 1

LAE CITY UYEP II OFFICE LOCATION:

  • Lae City Authority Offices, Level 1, Morobe Haus

WHAT IS THE CRITERIA TO MEET TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE UYEP II?

1. You must be between the ages of 16-29 years.
2. You must not have been employed in the last 6 months.
3. You must have not been in school for the last 6 months.
4. Must have been living in NCD / Morobe Province for the last 12 months.

So for more information or to keep informed on the latest regarding the UYEP II, you can follow them on their LinkedIn Page at this link ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/urban-youth-employment-project-8ba859146/ ) or on their Facebook Page at this link ( https://www.facebook.com/UYEPII ).

We believe the UYEP II is funded by the World Bank Group and facilitated by N.C.D.C and Lae City Authority, respectively. Here’s a link to the abstract of the project, on the World Bank Group Website ( https://projects.worldbank.org/en/projects-operations/project-detail/P166420 )

But to summarize it all, here’s a list of why the UYEP II is important to youths in PNG:

  1. Employment Opportunities: The project addresses the critical issue of youth unemployment by offering job training and employment opportunities. It helps young people in cities like Port Moresby, where unemployment rates are high, gain practical skills and work experience.
  2. Poverty Reduction: By facilitating access to short-term employment and vocational training, UYEP II provides a pathway out of poverty for young people who might otherwise struggle to find formal work.
  3. Skill Development: UYEP II focuses on skills development and training, which are essential for youth to become more competitive in the job market. This can increase their chances of long-term employment and financial independence.
  4. Community Impact: Through public works and community service, the project not only benefits youth but also helps improve urban infrastructure, leading to better living conditions for the wider population.
  5. Crime and Social Issues: High youth unemployment in urban areas is often linked to rising crime and social unrest. By engaging young people in meaningful work and training, UYEP II helps reduce these risks, contributing to a more stable and productive society.

In essence, UYEP II provides critical support to the youth in PNG (Port Moresby and Lae at the moment) by enhancing their employability, reducing poverty, and fostering a more secure urban environment in Port Moresby, Lae City and hopefully all over Papua New Guinea in the near future.

Education Recruitment SME Accounting SME Management Transferrable Skills

Why teaching SME Business/Accounting in Technical Colleges contributes to a dynamic Trades Workforce in Papua New Guinea

The Port Moresby Technical College recently had it’s 60th graduation on the 27th March, 2024 at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby, PNG. The graduation theme at the was “Investing and Empowering Our Graduates with High Quality, Innovative Employable Business and Technical Skills to meet Industry Business Needs in the 21st Century.” (Source: https://www.postcourier.com.pg/pom-technical-college-introduce-advance-programs/ )

Image 2: A Graduating Class from the Port Moresby Technical College. (Source: https://pomtechnicalcollege.com/?page_id=85 )

This theme coincides with the recent introduction of Diploma courses in SME Accounting, SME Business Management and Customs Brokerage at the Technical College. These courses, combined with the technically and trades-oriented courses, look to equip students with the knowledge to monetize there technical/trades knowledge with the business management and Accounting and Business Management knowledge.

Image 3: I drone shot of the Port Moresby Technical College campus with their contact details for enquiries. (Source: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=664619629019631&set=a.456662673148662 )

Imagine a Mechanic who has graduated from Pom Tech who has the knowledge and competencies of the current SME business environment to start their own Motor Mechanic business that can one day grow into a fully fledged business that can compete with the multinational owned Motor Mech businesses in the country in the future? This is the possible outcome of combining these SME business courses with Trades oriented roles.

But then there may be some factors that can impede the achievement of this goal, and a big one would be due to the unavailability of start-up capital required to commence a Trades/Technical SME Business, utilizing the qualifications obtained from Pom Tech.

This was elaborated in a recent post on LinkedIn by the page, PNG TVET Agenda, but more summarized in this paragraph from the post: “The only hindrance I foresee is the starting capital. Most TVET graduates come from rural families whose income is through subsistence farming. As such, even with the energy, the resources such as land accompanied with a certificate, without the vital funding, such thoughts will remain a dream.” (Source: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/png-tvet-agenda_sme-and-tvet-there-are-many-motivations-to-activity-7183921330164047872-i6UV?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop ).

Image 4: Port Moresby Technical Students on an OJT assignment with Remington Group. (Source: https://remingtongrouppng.com.pg/news-category/remington-news/ )

It is our strong belief that in order to obtain the capital required to start off a business, one must obtain a job first, in this case, with the Trade Qualifications one obtains from a Technical College such as Pom Tech. Once employment is obtained, one must put aside funding from fortnightly wages & salaries to build enough seed capital to set the business. And the key to obtaining employment is to know the basics of effective job seeking methods and techniques.

Jobs need to be seen by our future Trades Folk not only has an avenue to build a career but also seen as an investment opportunity: Your savings, your superannuation, your bonuses, they’re all generated from the wages and salaries and efforts to meet targets which can fund the seed capital required to start your SME Business.

The PNG Recruiter is very excited to hear about Pom Tech offering courses on SME Management & Accounting as we’ve always envisioned a Trade Workforce that is equip with Business, Finance and even Technological knowledge to be dynamic enough to create locally owned and managed Trades Businesses in the future that can add value to various businesses in PNG, like the lucrative mining, oil & gas sector, for example.

This is important today as we see a decline in the PNG Economy, producing the future business men and women of Trades related organizations is a must to diversify PNG’s revenue generating opportunities, which will hopefully turn our economy around.

We have the utmost respect for you all in PNG.

We’ve made some significant advances in completing the materials needed for 3 of the modules we’ve developed, we have about 7 more to go. We are working every day towards getting the course material in order for our audience and hope to launch it before the school holidays/year end, as this is a crucial time where graduands and soon-to-be graduands will be looking to the future for employment opportunities.
